up
night
dark and cool
in to the loo
the white orchid is still well
it is almost unreal
brush the strange taste away from the teeth.
Then decide to return to the computer, read and write.
There is the sound of bells in the darkened room.
Four bells of Saint Martins, then four tolls from saint Martin's big bells.
The sound of revelry, men shouting.
Now it is not revelry any more, voices raised in anger in the otherwise silent streets.
Sound of a motor car engine, running, up in the front, in the square by the church., more voices.
A man runs up the street dressed in sports clothes and a singlet. He has an unsteady gait. Starts to run, he has flip flops on,
Then he returns,a few minutes later, returns to the church. Still unsteady.
There is still shouting from the square, raised voices.
A police car drives up the road now, from the church, It is followed by a large police van.
All at walking pace.
Then another man comes down the road. Followe by the police card, ten metres after.
He is dressed in sports wear too.
The police car has the numbers 1971 on it's plates.
Then an obviously inebriated man comes up the street, bumping into every corner of the houses on the way,
He makes a yelping noise, and continues across the town.
he goes on his way, back home
The noises increase, and then decrease.
A couple, man and woman go up the street, away from the church, away from the noise.
She is angry, shouting at the young man all of the time.
When they have gone there is the sound of a cat outside, calling loudly.
Look out, and the neighbour opposite looks out too.
He calls the cat, it crosses the road to the front door.
Waits
The lights go on opposite.
The cat is let in
The police patrol comes back down the road, very slowly.
There are sounds of drunk shouting in the street.
it is a quarter to five now.
Three bells from saint Martin's, three quarters of the hour.
The excitemwnt is over.
