In the dark, reach over and silence the beeping alarm clock. pull the knees up towards the chin so that the legs are outside the bed covers and over the side of the bed. Let the feet drop over the side of the bed to the floor. Push the body up, put the whole lot into a vertical position. Good, and now off to the bathroom, let the cold water in the pipes out so that the shower warms up. The teeth, and then that is all. That is all, check the bag's contents, there is the little camera, there are the earphones-For later, for learning Portuguese. Down the creaking stairs and out into the alley. There are grey waste bins in front of every other house on the street. Return, and get the bin from it's place in the hallway. Put it out, on the pavement. It will he collected later.
Down the street's, down to the river, and wait. Wait for the bus. Watch the cars pass. Count the wheels on the truck passing. There are five. Ten wheels. Eighteen tyres One driver. Fifty tons, perhaps. A big white truck.
Board the bus, that has just arrived. Pay the fare. Dolores is there.

The gravel bed is of pale stones, they will darken in time, the same time that will turn the rails themselves into uniform dark brown, except for their top surfaces.
