Outside the window, two men and their

machines are working in an area that

used to be an area of parkland between

a path and a building.

Now the men and the machines are building a road, which is due to take up the space between the path and the buildings

It is a temporary road, but the two men are building  as if     

that should last for ever. With the greatest of care they are removing the surface with Their digger,just scratching off the top layer, then

flattening it with a compacter made by Wacker, then spreading small amounts to fill a few dips, then stretching a line, then

measuring the discrepancies, and then repeating the procedure.

Both men are dressed in bright orange clothing, the kind of colouring that is brighter

than it should be. There are reflective bands

in the shoulders of their jackets.

They are producing a flat surface ready for covering with tarmacadam. It is yet

another temporary road.
