Dark and cold and still there is a feeling of relief that everything is still in order, that all these sensations are still available. The day is lightening now, and it is time to go downstairs.
Yesterdays accident has left no mark on the old body, the body of the car is destroyed. A young driver taking a left turn off overlooked the approaching vehicle, the instinctive braking reaction was just insufficient to prevent the crash. Only bent metal, nothing else was the result of this business which all took less than a couple of seconds. There was no chance of evasion for either party.
The morning is spent with telephone calls to automobile associations, long winded lawyers and finally an assessor. The papers are all collected in an envelope, the details written on the outside. That is the end of it, it remains to be seen if the opposing lawyer trees to make a case for his client. That would be a nuisance, the matter seems clear.
The shock of the accident settles into the bones of the body, the relief that there is no serious harm.
The day is colder now.
