big and yellow

today is the day that the skip is to be delivered, it is a shock to wake and to look at the watch and realise that it is late now. It is due at seven, it is now six fifteen.
Get up, put on clothes, go to the coffee maker.

Leave all the washing for later, it will be a dirty day anyway,
filling the skip with rubble from the building work

Sit at the table, then stand up and look out of the window.
The son, awake now for some time, comes over, a big hug, a good morning.
That is comforting.

Go up to the new flat, look at yesterdays work.
It is in order.

Sit and drink a cup of coffee.

There is a noise outside the window, a yellow  skip passes.
Go down to the street.

Argue with the driver, he insists on putting up the skip as it suits him.
Now it is going to be even harder work to fill it.
Sign for the skip anyhow. It is big and yellow.

The cat is in the hallway, the excitement and noise has made the fur on it's tail bristle.
It arches it's back, and a sudden movement on the part of the son makes it turn and run up the stairs to the safety of the landing.
It sits there, staring down into the entrance way with wide-open eyes.

This is a friday morning
