ups and downs and a long walk

Talk to the son in the morning and have one egg on toast for breakfast. The weather has become colder, so put on a hoodie. Then decide to go on foot to collect the car. It is a distance of some twelve kilometres, that should take about four hours.

Walk through the deserted fairground, deserted by the people seeking amusement. There are a few workers tending to the rides and to the stands. The fair opens at midday or maybe even a bit later.

Cross the river into the wooded water meadows, and follow the dykes across the country. Find another bridge to cross the motorway and carry on. It is a long walk, and there is a strong wind blowing. Close the jacket to prevent it getting caught in the wind.

Later on, cross the railway lines, and pass the small memorial to the two children killed there years ago by a passing train before the eyes of their mother.

Chat with the repair crew, admire the parts removed from the car, all of which are in poor condition. They are all plastic parts from inside the engine, valve guides and seals mostly. In the fifteen years of the cars life they are all in poor condition and it is good that they have been replaced.

Pay the bill, this is not as serious as expected.

The cars engine runs more smoothly now, and the fuel consumption has gone down noticeably according to the instruments. Take the car back, dropping in to a filling station on the way.

The petrol consumption has gone down, the price of petrol has risen.
