backlit skeleton

The night turned warm, and in the morning the heater may be turned off. The temperature inside is not overly warm, but it is very warm for the time of year. Perhaps the sense of warmth is still in the walls of the small bedroom.

Make the bed, ensuring that the covers are tight and smooth. There is some satisfaction to be had from leaving things in this way, and finding them just so later on. It is as if there had been a good fairy, even though it was just oneself. Such are the joys of self-deception.

Breakfast preparation amid the disaster area left by the son or the wife or both last night. The cat comes in requiring attention and feeding. The cat food is actually tidied away in the refrigerator, this is surprising. And then the toast is made, the eggs are boiled and the coffee has burbled in the silver pot. Upstairs with the lot! Breakfast looking out on the balcony!

Up on the ridge there is a solitary person walking, the moving outline visible between the backlit skeletons of the leafless trees.

The bells of Saint Martins church are ringing for the Epiphany.

it is ten fifty now
