The awakening took place at five thirty, the persistent sound from the alarm set on the mobile 'phone took care of that. The first thing was to use the shower in the sterile small guesthouse room. Then there was the surprise to find eight wasps buzzing around the light fixture in the room. They were not threatening, but the insects were confused by the light, it was blueish in colour and may have been from some LED light source. Turn of this light and switch on the bedside lamp. This does not appear to be exciting for the wasps in comparison with the main room light. Put on the clothes chosen the evening before, then pack the suitcase. Downstairs, arrange with the friend as to which keys need to be put into the letter box and which should be left on the counter. Then walk up to the old church to collect the car and take the road to Heidelberg where the wedding is to take place. There was no breakfast on offer at the guest house, but that did not matter.
On the journey, at roughly what would be the half-way mark, stop at a filling statiopn that offers coffee and sandwiches. Upon inspection of the sandwiches decide on a croissant, and the friend has one too. Her dog has a bowl of water and a small amount of dog food.
The journey proceeds without mishap, and at its end there is a sterile small house perched on the side of a hill. The floors of the house are fitted with white marble flagstones, it has the air of having been chosen from a catalogue at the building suppliers. Many things are in order, and there are some surprises.
The wedding takes place in a neighbouring town, at a very presentable registry office. It is ceremony is competently run by a young registrar, she is attentive, friendly and correct. She has learned a few details of their relationship from the couple and makes a very competent job of it.
Return to the sterile house on the hill, where there is a small reception for close friends and family.
Take pictures, just snapshots, of the festivities. It is not a thing that is pleasant or that is worth doing.
