Woke at four in the morning today and worried that the car may have be in front of a fire entrance. It was carefully placed yesterday evening, away from the gates to the entrance, but the pedestrian path was at the same level as the road, even beyond the gates for the fire brigade. There is worry that there is some small bye-law or special rule covering parking in such a situation.
Get up, put on the clothes and walk through the still sleeping town to the car. This is exactly there where it had been left the night before, without any tickets or notices having been placed under the windshield wipers. Therefore, all is well.
Drive the car to a free spot in a street nearer home, and leave it there.
At home, replace the battery in the smoke alarm, which has been making occasional noises all night. These noises signal that the old battery is now almost empty. The smoke alarm is difficult to access, as it has been all but forgotten about for the last five years.
And then the accrued exhaustion of a near sleepless night takes its toll.
